More Than Just a Tent

De Waard Glamping Tents are renowned for their quality

Largely handmade from world leading Tencate fabrics, the De Waard difference starts with its cotton-polyester canvas. This natural looking fabric sits perfectly in any landscape, and unlike its PVC rivals, allows the tent to breathe naturally, creating a comfortable environment that can be enhanced by traditional heating and cooling methods.

But why is De Waard more than just a tent? It’s because they stand behind their promise of quality. If the canvas is damaged or not up to standard, simply send it back to De Waard and they will repair the canvas for free, in some circumstances as many as 40 years later!

De Waard History

The origin of De Waard lies in 1948. Machiel de Waard, a sailmaker for the Royal Navy, designed his first tent at campsite de Lepelaar: The Albatros #1. In the need for a tent that does not blow over he started drawing on the back of an envelope. The tent was designed in a shape that could withstand powerful gusts and offer a pleasant shelter for a family. Until this moment tents were square shaped. The Dutch Autoclub ANWB therefore of as “that crazy tent from De Waard”.

In that period it was custom to dig trenches around the tent to prevent water coming in. As a solution for this, De Waard introduced a waterproof sewn-in groundsheet underneath the complete tent.

Now, 70 years later, the Albatros still exists. Throughout the years the tent saw alterations for the changing needs. In 2015 the Albatros #4 was introduced. A tent with all the features like the original design but altered in size and functionality to make it suitable for this day and age. It did not stay with just the Albatros for very long. Over and over again we introduce new designs, each one unique but equal in certain features. It is our passion to produce tents of exceptional quality and this will never change. For a De Waard tent we carefully select the best and most durable materials and raw materials. With a great deal of attention our craftsmen mainly hand-make these tents out of those materials. This combination of the best materials and craftsmanship make our tents extremely strong.

Integrating De Waard tents into your glamping operation involves a few specific considerations that leverage their strengths. Their breathable cotton-polyester canvas, for instance, provides superior natural temperature regulation compared to synthetic materials, and understanding the nuances of different event tent fabrics is crucial for guest comfort. This inherent comfort is a major selling point for guests seeking an immersive, yet comfortable, outdoor experience.

When planning your site, remember that De Waard tents are engineered for resilience, meeting storm force wind certifications and significant snow load requirements. This robust construction means they can be utilized year-round in many climates, maximizing your operational season and return on investment. For those looking to expand their hospitality offerings, exploring options like The Oaks or The Hollys can provide diverse guest experiences, and understanding different types of event tent fabrics can help you make an informed choice.

Here are some critical aspects to keep in mind for your De Waard tents:

  • Site Preparation: Ensure a level and well-drained foundation for optimal tent stability and longevity.
  • Ventilation: While the canvas breathes naturally, understanding airflow within the tent can further enhance guest comfort, especially with heating or cooling systems.
  • Maintenance: Familiarize yourself with the care recommendations for Tencate fabrics to ensure the longest possible lifespan and continued aesthetic appeal.
  • Permitting: EJH and De Waard have worked to ensure ease of permitting, providing engineered drawings and certifications for your project.

The commitment to quality extends to the materials and craftsmanship, with De Waard tents being handmade in European factories. This dedication ensures that each structure not only meets stringent safety standards but also offers the distinctive aesthetic that has made the brand iconic for over 75 years.
